Wasser, Strom und gute Nachrichten: Hafenupdates in Mommark und Sønderborg

In Mommark, an important harbor in southern Als, significant progress has been made towards the restoration of damaged facilities. The recent visit by YACHT magazine revealed that the second floating jetty on the starboard side after the entrance has been reactivated, with the first one to follow next week. Water and electricity services have also been restored, signaling positive developments in the harbor’s recovery. However, the wooden jetty behind the green beacon remains completely destroyed, but long-term residents have taken on the task of rebuilding it themselves.

The floating jetties on the opposite side have also been operational, although the mole leading to them is currently closed to guests due to storm damage. Locals are allowed access for now, with plans to fill the holes and repair the mole in the coming week. The bathing jetty behind the harbor has been reconstructed, along with the berth places located at the end of the harbor basin, directly in front of the restaurant. Despite ongoing challenges such as a narrow and silted entrance, the harbor, restaurant, and camping site have been operational and welcomed numerous visitors during sunny weekends.

Carsten Kock, the operator of Mommark harbor, shared insights regarding the reconstruction efforts, highlighting restrictions on dredging due to environmental concerns. An exception for dredging is hoped for in August to improve water depth. Plans are also underway to expand the marina, with initial approval for a second harbor basin proposed via the construction of a new mole near the old smoking oven location. If successful, Mommark will grow to accommodate up to 300 vessels, requiring additional investment for a comprehensive project that includes a crane, service, and winter storage hall.

For sailors in need of a mooring spot, three permanent places are still available in Mommark. However, these spots come with the condition that crews commit to regular sailing on weekends and preferably several weeks of sailing during the summer season as Kock aims to reserve the berths for guests. The damages incurred during the storm have imposed financial burdens on the harbor, with Danish insurance companies not providing compensation for storm surges. For the latest updates on water depth, visitors are advised to check the harbor’s website.
