Mumbai: In a sharp critique, Shiv Sena Rajya Sabha MP Milind Deora lambasted the Maha Vikas Aghadi, accusing them of neglecting the Dalit community in leadership roles. Deora specifically targeted the Congress and the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) for their decision to deny a ticket to Prof Varsha Gaikwad for the Mumbai South Central Lok Sabha seat. Prof Gaikwad, a Congress MLA from Dharavi and President of the Mumbai Regional Congress Committee (MRCC), found herself at the center of controversy due to her caste background.
Deora expressed his disappointment with the MVA’s reluctance to field Dalit candidates in prominent constituencies, highlighting the disparity in opportunities provided to the community. He criticized Shiv Sena (UBT) for contesting from 21 seats in Maharashtra but only fielding one Dalit candidate, while Chief Minister Eknath Shinde had already nominated 8 candidates, including 3 Dalits. Deora condemned the alleged anti-Dalit stance displayed by Congress and Sena (UBT), emphasizing the need for equal representation and opportunities for all communities.
Furthermore, Deora revealed internal opposition within the Congress against Prof Varsha Gaikwad’s candidacy, citing discrimination based on her caste during previous leadership roles. He disclosed that Uddhav Thackeray advised against nominating Gaikwad for the Lok Sabha seat, a decision Deora found unacceptable. Despite Gaikwad’s qualifications and dedication to public service, she was deemed unfit for the position solely due to her background.
