Moderater Kurs: Analyse der Pezeshkian-Regierung nach iranischer Präsidentschaftswahl

Pezeshkian’s cabinet predicted to embrace moderate approach towards governance: analysis

Following the intense runoff presidential elections in Iran on July 5th, where reformist Masoud Pezeshkian emerged triumphant over conservative rival Saeed Jalili, discussions have erupted regarding the future trajectory of the nation. Political pundits are now delving into the likely composition of Pezeshkian’s team and its potential repercussions on both domestic and international policies.

In a recent interview with Farhikhtegan Newspaper, Parviz Amini, a respected university lecturer and political analyst, has pointed out that Pezeshkian’s government is expected to be marked by a moderate stance. Amini underlined that the details of Pezeshkian’s governing agenda were somewhat vague during his campaign, emphasizing that the effectiveness of his presidency will heavily hinge on his selection of cabinet members. According to Amini, the array of individuals assigned to key roles in economics, culture, and foreign affairs will critically shape the future course of Pezeshkian’s administration, with moderate political figures projected to wield significant influence.

Throughout his presidential bid, Pezeshkian was frequently accompanied by notable figures from the reformist camp, including former foreign minister Mohammad Javad Zari and former finance minister Ali Tayebnia.

A noteworthy aspect of the elections was the 10% surge in voter turnout during the second round. Amini highlighted the pivotal role played by the two televised debates held in the lead-up to the runoff in energizing voter engagement.

“The debates provided a platform for both candidates to outline their visions and connect with diverse voter segments. Jalili sought to divert voters from Pezeshkian by framing his potential administration as a continuation of President Hassan Rouhani’s tenure, which some perceived as a period of stagnation. Conversely, Pezeshkian endeavored to attract Jalili’s supporters by accentuating Jalili’s conservative stance on cultural and social issues,” explained the expert.

Following his victory with over 53.7% of the votes, Pezeshkian is set to succeed the late President Ebrahim Raisi, with a significant 16.3 million individuals casting their ballots in support of the reformist candidate.
