Konservative dominieren die Schlagzeilen: Negativberichterstattung über Tories in Woche zwei des Wahlkampfs

Press coverage of the current general election has maintained a balanced approach, with varying levels of scrutiny observed for different political parties. In recent weeks, the Conservative party has faced heightened criticism in newspapers and television, particularly following Rishi Sunak’s early departure from the 80th D-Day anniversary commemorations. Despite typically sympathetic outlets expressing disapproval, the Daily Express and Daily Mail have remained loyal to the Conservatives.

On the other hand, Labour leader Keir Starmer has adopted a less visible stance, delaying the party’s manifesto launch and navigating the fallout from the D-Day incident. While maintaining his position as the second most prominent political figure, his presence in media coverage has decreased. In contrast, Rishi Sunak saw a slight decline in media visibility in the second week of the campaign.

Analysis of media coverage has highlighted taxation and the divisive nature of political discourse as prominent themes, dominating over half of all news content. Additional topics included immigration, the economy, standards and scandals, and the NHS, with Brexit and climate change receiving less attention. The media’s focus on tax policies has intensified, with contrasting claims and counterclaims between major parties driving the narrative.

Reform UK has garnered significant press and TV coverage compared to the Liberal Democrats, with a higher number of positive evaluations despite modest overall attention. Female politicians, particularly Rachel Reeves, have seen increased representation in the media’s top political figures. However, women in these positions receive notably less coverage compared to their male counterparts.

Labour has faced a notable amount of negative coverage across various newspapers, with exceptions found in titles like the Daily Mirror and Financial Times. In television broadcasts, Keir Starmer’s speaking time has decreased substantially, potentially influenced by Sunak’s challenges during the week. Overall, media analysis provides valuable insights into the evolving dynamics of the general election campaign.
