In Binde, Sachsen-Anhalt, tragically around 20,000 pigs perished in a massive fire that broke out on Friday afternoon. Approximately 10 to 14 barns of the large facility in Salzlandkreis were engulfed in flames, prompting the response of twelve fire departments from surrounding areas, totaling 150 firefighters. Despite the efforts of multiple veterinarians and authorities, many animals were unable to be saved.
During the extensive operation, characterized as a major incident, two firefighters sustained minor injuries. The battle against the blaze continued throughout the night, with the challenge compounded by the presence of photovoltaic systems on numerous roofs within the facility, contributing to the difficulty in extinguishing the fire.
Tragically, almost a third of the total animal population of 64,000 perished in the flames, with only a few barns being opened in time for some animals to escape outdoors. The cause of the fire remains unknown, prompting an investigation by the criminal police, with damages estimated to exceed one million euros.
The Binde pig breeding facility had been a subject of local controversy and criticism from residents and animal welfare advocates. Legal action taken by the city of Arendsee in the past resulted in the annulment of the facilitys operating permit due to reasons including the absence of an environmental impact assessment. Despite this ruling, the case remains pending final legal resolution.
