Spielberg (dpa) – The Formula 1 world champion, Max Verstappen, showcased his supremacy by clinching a hard-fought victory in the sprint race in Austria. The 26-year-old Dutch driver further solidified his lead in the championship with a thrilling win over a 100-kilometer sprint in Spielberg on Saturday, besting McLaren drivers Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris. Verstappen repeated his triumph from the previous year in Styria and secured his third sprint win of the season, earning himself eight valuable championship points.

The competition was fierce, with the McLaren drivers proving to be a formidable challenge for Verstappen. Reflecting on the race, Verstappen acknowledged the tough competition stating, „They made it difficult for me. We had to work for this victory.“ Meanwhile, Norris expressed frustration at not being able to maintain his brief lead, admitting that he made mistakes during the race. Despite the challenges, he acknowledged the difficulty of overtaking Verstappen, who displayed exceptional skill and composure throughout the race.

The sprint race faced an initial delay as the first start had to be aborted due to safety concerns caused by photographers near the track. However, once the race commenced, Verstappen successfully defended his position against Norris and Piastri, engaging in a thrilling battle for the lead. Amidst high temperatures of 30 degrees Celsius, the fans at the Red Bull Ring witnessed exhilarating maneuvers before Verstappen managed to pull ahead and maintain a comfortable lead until the finish line.

As Verstappen celebrated his victory, German driver Nico Hülkenberg finished in 14th place in his Haas race car, missing out on securing any championship points. With the qualifying session for the main Grand Prix scheduled for Saturday afternoon, anticipation is building for the eleventh race of the season on Sunday at 15:00 (Sky). Verstappen, currently leading the championship standings with 70 points, is the clear favorite heading into the Grand Prix, having claimed victory on one of his favorite tracks in Austria.
