Frühgeborene und Mütter: Die Bedeutung des frühen Haut-zu-Haut-Kontakts in der Uniklinik Köln

Die positiven Auswirkungen des frühen Hautkontakts: Erfolgreiche Methode in der Neonatologie

Jana Rosenberger, Team leader, and Sara Reyer, a nursing scientist from the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at the University Hospital Cologne, were honored with a lecture award at the Annual Meeting of the Society for Neonatology and Pediatric Intensive Care Medicine in Munich. Their presentation, titled „Early birth-early bonding, a contradiction or established method?“ earned them a €250 prize. The presentation focused on the early skin-to-skin contact between premature babies and their mothers, which takes place in the delivery room at the hospital, aiming to facilitate a secure mother-child bond. This approach particularly aims to reduce the risk of developmental disorders in premature infants.

International recommendations, like the WHO/UNICEF Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative, discourage separating mothers and babies unless medically necessary. However, premature babies require immediate support for cardiorespiratory adjustment after birth, making direct skin contact challenging initially. Once the adjustment is complete, skin-to-skin contact is initiated in the presence of the father or partner, with continuous respiratory support, infusion therapy, and monitoring.

The Deisy Study conducted at the University Hospital Cologne demonstrated the positive effects of early skin contact, showing an increase in the mother’s oxytocin levels and a decrease in cortisol stress hormones. Postnatal depression and bonding disorders were less common, and more premature babies were exclusively fed with breast milk. The study confirmed that early skin contact in the delivery room is feasible and beneficial for premature infants, a method that has been established at the hospital for several years.

The recognition received by Jana Rosenberger and Sara Reyer highlights the importance of their research and practical implementation of early bonding practices in the care of premature infants. Their work contributes to promoting the well-being of both infants and mothers in the neonatal care setting, aligning with current best practices and international guidelines supporting mother-infant bonding immediately after birth.
