Rising Stars Shine at Schumann Competition in Zwickau

Last night in Zwickau, two exceptional musicians from distant lands captured the hearts of the audience and the judges at the renowned Schumann Competition. Zhuohan Sun, a 31-year-old from China, claimed the prestigious first prize and Gold Medal in the Men’s Vocal category, while Vincent Ong, a 23-year-old talent from Malaysia, secured the top spot in the Piano category. The City’s Cultural Office announced that Diego Mallen, a 30-year-old from Mexico, received a special prize of 3000 euros for his outstanding performance in accompanying vocals.

It was a night of exceptional talent and thrilling performances, with no first prize awarded in the Women’s Vocal category. However, the German soprano Elisabeth Birgmeier clinched the second position, showcasing her exceptional skill and artistry. With 70 young vocalists and 56 pianists vying for top honors, the competition was fierce and showcased the diversity and richness of musical talent from around the world.

The Schumann Competition, now in its 19th edition, concluded with a mesmerizing winner’s concert, a fitting tribute to the legendary composer Robert Schumann. The competition, held every four years in Zwickau, the birthplace of Schumann, has become a staple in the classical music world, attracting top talents and music enthusiasts from across the globe.
