Imagine being able to discuss your upcoming anesthesia procedure from the comfort of your own home. This innovative approach is now a reality at RWTH Aachen University Hospital, where the first telemedicine anesthesia clinic in Germany has been established. Patients no longer need to visit the hospital days in advance for a face-to-face consultation with an anesthesiologist – they can now do it digitally.

This groundbreaking initiative allows patients to fill out the medical history questionnaire online and upload relevant medical documents, ensuring a seamless and efficient process. The hospital assures patients that the telemedicine platform complies with all legal and data protection requirements. Initially introduced in the fields of gynecology/obstetrics, trauma surgery, and oral and maxillofacial surgery, the telemedicine anesthesia clinic aims to enhance patient experience and accessibility to care.

To utilize the telemedicine anesthesia clinic, patients must be over 18 years old, without serious pre-existing conditions, and own an internet-enabled device with a webcam. Additionally, the scheduled surgical procedure must be at least seven days away. Dr. Rolf Rossaint, the Director of the Department of Anesthesiology, expressed his ambition for the telemedicine anesthesia clinic to expand to all medical specialties in the near future.

Collaborating with Aachen-based company Docs in Clouds TeleCare GmbH, RWTH Aachen University Hospital has paved the way for a new era of anesthesia consultation. The integration of telemedicine not only simplifies the pre-operative process for patients but also represents a significant advancement in healthcare services, aligning with the hospital’s commitment to innovation and patient-centered care.
