According to the official WhatsApp blog post, the upcoming features include a significant increase in the number of participants. Previously, only up to eight people could join a video call. This number will now quadruple, allowing video calls with up to 32 participants.

While WhatsApp may not reach the levels of large conference tools like Google Teams, where up to 1000 people can participate in a video call, the new video chat feature could cater well to smaller meetings or family video calls.

Similar to most video call applications, WhatsApp will now highlight the person speaking with a frame. Additionally, users will be able to share their screen and sound, enabling all call participants to watch a video together. The screen sharing function is still relatively new, having been added to WhatsApp in August 2023.

Clarity in Calls Despite Poor Connection: WhatsApp Improves Video and Audio Quality

WhatsApp is dedicated to enhancing video and audio quality continuously. One step in this direction is transitioning to the in-house MLow Codec designed to enhance call audio quality. Previously, the platform had been using the Open-Source Opus Codec, according to its parent company Meta.

As indicated on the Engineering at Meta website, many calls experienced poor network connections leading to subpar audio quality throughout or segments of calls. The introduction of the new codec aims to maintain clear sound quality even under challenging network conditions. The post includes audio samples for users to evaluate.
