Sabrina Wittmann, 32, made history on Thursday by becoming the first female head coach in German men’s professional football. She takes over from Michael Köllner, 54, at third-division club FC Ingolstadt and is set to debut in a home match against Waldhof Mannheim on Sunday at 19:30. Just three weeks later, Wittmann could potentially secure her first title as the team faces Würzburger Kickers in the final of the Bavarian Toto Cup on May 25.

Even in the event of a loss, FC Ingolstadt has already secured a spot in next season’s DFB-Pokal. Wittmann, currently serving as an interim coach, will lead the team for the remaining fixtures. The decision for her appointment was made known to her on Wednesday, with the confirmation coming the following day. Wittmann expressed her unwavering commitment, stating, „I never thought for a second about not doing it.“

Sporting Director Ivica Grlic, 48, indicated the possibility of a permanent position for Wittmann, acknowledging the need to explore the coaching market while emphasizing the upcoming games. Wittmann remains focused on the challenges ahead, including pursuing the UEFA Pro License in August to further her career in men’s football. Her performance in the upcoming matches will undoubtedly influence the decision regarding her future as head coach of FC Ingolstadt.
