Deutschlandticket-Aktion: Kostenlose Zugfahrten nach Frankreich bis Paris im Sommer

Germany and France are taking a significant step towards greater connectivity and mobility for young adults this summer. Through a joint initiative between the German states of Baden-Württemberg, Rheinland-Pfalz, Saarland, and the French region of Grand Est, holders of the Germany Ticket will have the opportunity to travel to select regions in France, including Paris, at no extra cost. This initiative aims to foster greater cross-border cooperation and offer young individuals the chance to explore new horizons.

This cross-border travel opportunity is available to Germany Ticket holders aged 27 and under, residing in the aforementioned German regions. Similarly, young individuals in eastern France can utilize their „Pass Jeune“ to travel within Germany. This exchange program represents a step towards a more connected and supportive Europe, as highlighted by Franck Leroy, President of the Grand Est region. The availability of discounted Germany Tickets since April has already made travel more accessible to many young adults.

Starting from July 1st until August 31st, young Germany Ticket holders can enjoy complimentary train journeys to select French destinations. Travel restrictions might include the requirement of a valid passport or ID for verification purposes. When using the Germany Ticket in France, passengers are limited to regional trains, primarily operated by TER (Train Express Régional), and the Fluo bus network without any additional fees. It is important to note that long-distance trains like TGV, ICE, and IC are not included in this offer, and some French routes may necessitate seat reservations, which are free according to the Grand Est region.

Destinations like Paris, Strasbourg, Colmar, Reims, Metz, Mulhouse, Nancy, and Troyes fall under the scope of the Germany Ticket’s validity in the Grand Est region. Notably, travelers can even reach Paris-Est station, despite it being outside the designated region, opening up opportunities for excursions, such as attending the upcoming Olympic Summer Games. Discussions surrounding cross-border ticket utilization have been ongoing for years, with France initially considering a 49-Euro ticket akin to Germany’s model, albeit later discontinuing the project in spring 2024. The future holds promise for enhanced regional train services between Germany and France, hinting at increased flexibility and ease for cross-border travel. Improved rail connections to Paris slated for this summer indicate a positive trend towards more efficient and convenient travel options across Europe.
