Meckenbeuren: Hochwassergefahr steigt – Empfehlung zur Evakuierung ausgesprochen

In Meckenbeuren, Baden-Württemberg, around 1300 residents have been advised to leave their homes due to the increasing risk of flooding. This recommendation was made as a precautionary measure, not as a mandatory evacuation, according to a spokesperson for the town in Upper Swabia. The continuous heavy rainfall is expected to lead to extreme flooding in the Schussen River, elevating the risk for other rivers in the area.

Authorities, including the fire department, are making announcements to notify the affected residents, urging them to seek shelter with family or friends for the upcoming nights. Additionally, a shelter is available at an educational center, with further accommodations being arranged possibly in the school.

Mayor Georg Schellinger expressed hope for a moderation in the weather conditions, anticipating less severe flooding than initially predicted. However, as a precaution, preparations for evacuation have already commenced due to the possibility of surpassing past flood levels along the Schussen River. The goal is to allow individuals to calmly prepare for the challenging situation, pack their essentials, and possibly stay with friends rather than being abruptly awakened during the night.

A significant portion of Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria is bracing for a weekend of prolonged heavy rain, with some areas under the highest warning level. Regions such as Ostalb and Oberschwaben are expected to be hardest hit, with precipitation reaching up to 150 liters per square meter in some areas, as per meteorologists.
