Gaza Solidarity Encampment at the University of New Mexico
An altar at the center of the Gaza Solidarity Encampment at the University of New Mexico features a portrait of Dr. Refaat Alareer, a prominent Palestinian professor and poet. Tragically, Alareer, along with his brother, sister, and her four children, fell victim to an Israeli airstrike on December 7, 2023. The violence continued on April 26, when another bombing claimed the life of Alareer’s daughter Shaima, her husband, and two-month-old son. These heart-wrenching events reflect the devastating impact of Israel’s ongoing conflict in the region.
The encampment, now in its second week, serves as a platform for individuals to recenter on the underlying purpose of the camp – to amplify Gaza’s struggle for justice amid relentless violence. Kency Cornejo, an associate art professor, emphasized the historical context of oppression and genocide that has plagued Palestine, highlighting the need for solidarity and support.
Faculty members at the University of New Mexico organized a teach-in over the weekend as part of their ongoing advocacy efforts. They have also urged the university to safeguard students‘ free speech rights amidst growing tensions. The encampment provides a space where art serves a dual purpose – both as a form of expression and as a means of advocating for justice in Gaza.
The call for divestment from Israel is a key agenda of the encampment, despite not being formally listed on the upcoming UNM Board of Regents meeting. Organizers seek transparency regarding the university’s financial connections to Israel and advocate for redirecting funds towards initiatives that promote community well-being. The involvement of faculty members and students underscores a commitment to holding institutions accountable for their investments and actions.
In the face of escalating violence and loss of life, the Gaza Solidarity Encampment stands as a beacon of resilience and resistance. Through art, activism, and collective action, participants strive to envision a future that is liberated from the shackles of oppression. The voices raised in solidarity with Gaza echo a powerful message – one of unwavering support for justice and freedom.
